Access to education in Nicaragua is limited by supply and affordability constraints as well as infrastructure and pedagogical materials. Today, only 1 of 5 children in Nicaragua graduates from secondary school.
We focus our educational programs on reducing the indirect costs to education such as food and school supplies, therefore creating incentives for parents to send their children to school.
Our programs aim to improve school retention rates, increase enrollment and reduce hunger, by providing daily nutritious school meals, improving school-level infrastructure distributing school supplies and classroom furniture, building classrooms, computer labs, and water and sanitation stations.
Since 1992, we have distributed 1,051 containers of school supplies valued at $100.2 million, 168 school classrooms constructed or rehabilitated and trained over 1,500 teachers in new teaching methologies.
What have we achieved in 2018?
18 new classrooms
3 occupational centers
benefited +19,500 students with daily meals
received school supplies in 191 schools
Stanley enjoys going to school because he learns about different subjects and receives a daily school lunch. He is one of 10,200 boys and girls that receive a daily meal at school through the Program “Un Plato, Una Sonrisa” supported by ANF and the Coca-Cola System since 2004.
Emma could not contain the excitement of having a book in her hands and sitting down to read with her classmates in their new reading corner. The reading corner is an initiative of ANF and ¡Libros para Niños! in 3 schools in Managua.
Yahir is 6 years of age and studies in The Madre Teresa de Calcutta School in the community of Jiquilillo. Yahir is very happy with his new classroom now that it has a fan and water doesn’t get in when it rains. His classmates and him are proud to attend a school named after Mother Teresa.
