UNITED FOR NICARAGUA

ANF is a not-for-profit relief and development organization that provides opportunity and tools to those affected by poverty in Nicaragua.

Founded in 1992, ANF's work focuses on six program areas—education, health and nutrition, housing, water and sanitation, agriculture, and humanitarian aid—every day and during a crisis.

OUR PARTNERS

By working with partner organizations we implement over 100 programs throughout Nicaragua each year, working toward the most vulnerable being self-sufficient and free of poverty

In 1997, ANF partnered with Food for the Poor to carry out relief programs in Nicaragua. Since then, that relationship has strengthened considerably. Food for the Poor is ANF’s principal strategic partner and main contributor to ANF’s work to serve those affected by poverty and lacking access to life’s basic necessities.

OUR MISSION

To acquire directly or through strategic partners the necessary resources to contribute substantially and sustainably with the objective of reducing the impact of poverty in the lives of the most vulnerable population in Nicaragua; providing, without a profit, these resources to their beneficiaries, in an efficient, effective and transparent manner, with the assistance of a network of local partners. 

 

OUR STORY

1992

ANF is founded

To mitigate the effects of poverty in Nicaragua F Alfredo Pellas Jr, Theresita Pellas and Fr. León Pallais S.J. established ANF in the USA as a 501(c)3 registered non-profit organization focused on humanitarian aid, health, agriculture and education.

1997

Food for the Poor

ANF established a strategic alliance with Food for the Poor, a non-profit organization which became ANF’s main donor.

1998

Hurricane Mitch

Hurricane Mitch devastates the western coast of Nicaragua and ANF’s housing program is born with the construction of 263 homes for disaster-stricken families.

1999

Aid is doubled

In response to the catastrophe brought on by Hurricane Mitch, the organization experiences tremendous growth as donations doubled in regard to previous years, distributing 273 containers valued at $53 million dollars.

2004

Water and Sanitation Program

ANF’s water and sanitation program is created which aims to provide access to clean drinking water and implement sanitary solutions.

2007

Agriculture Program

Agriculture becomes a priority area for ANF after establishing a strategic alliance with Taiwan ICDF with the objective to help rural families get out of the cycle of poverty.

2012

Food for Education

ANF, Fabretto's Children Foundation and Food For The Poor are chosen to implement USDA's Food for Education Program in Nicaragua, which feeds 70,000 students on a daily basis for 3 consecutive years.

2015

Agricultural Training Center

ANF assumes leadership of the Agricultural Training Center (CEA by its Spanish acronym) with the objective of transfering low-cost technology and helping small-scale farmers reach their potential.

2017

25 Years

ANF celebrated twenty-five years of serving Nicaragua’s most vulnerable communities; investing a total of $49.6 million in programs and distributing 7,224 ocean-freight containers valued at $1.98 billion since 1992.

2018

Nicaragua in Crisis

In April of 2018, Nicaragua was engulfed in a crisis marked by large-scale protests and general unrest, which led to an economic downturn and extensive unemployment. ANF was able to continue its mission and aid local partners through the support of donors in particular, Food for the Poor.

2020

COVID-19 crisis

In Nicaragua, the COVID-19 pandemic affected the most vulnerable: the poor, the elderly and those without access to adequate healthcare. ANF actively worked with partner organizations and the support of generous donors to provide vital emergency aid such as food and hygiene supplies through the COVID-19 Relief Fund. These supplies helped vulnerable families cover their basic needs during the pandemic.
